Looking for a composite decking contractor?

So you're interested in a new deck and have been picking out composite or PVC decking. You've probably spent a lot of time reviewing the looks, features and benefits of several products and finally found your best fit.

The next step is figuring out how to get the materials you like onto your deck. A remodel or an addition can be stressful; it can certainly add value to your home, but only if it’s done correctly. So what’s the best way to find a good composite decking contractor?

Fiberon Horizon Plus Railing being installedFiberon offers access to their online Contractor Gallery that showcases creative and quality craftsmanship and is a great source for finding a contractor in your area. (And as you’re flipping through their photographs, take time to create your own Inspiration Book, a useful tool when you talk with your new contractor about what you’d like to see in your own space.)

You can easily search by zip code with the Contractor and Dealer Locator Tool on the Fiberon website. The North American Deck and Railing Association’s website also offers a search function for professional deck builders; click on Find Deck Builders under the For Consumer tab on the left side menu.

Visiting your local lumberyard or home improvement store and asking the staff for a recommendation, or talking to neighbors and friends who have recently had work done can be very useful as well.

Credentials. Ask about a license, insurance, bonding and references. Ask to see pictures or to go visit their previous projects.

Materials. Do they work with composite or PVC materials often? Is there an extra charge for hidden fasteners?

Estimate. Get a thoroughly itemized estimate for the work to be performed. This lets you know what to expect in advance. Good contractors follow the estimate to the letter, and the best contractors work with you to come in under budget.

Unplanned expenses. Discuss with your contractor a plan for handling hidden costs, i.e. having to add an extra stringer to the stairs or moving support posts.

Work style. As you talk with your potential contractor, imagine them at your home for a week (or more, if it's a large project). Ask them about their work style and think about your expectations. You do want to be able to have open and honest communication both ways to move your project forward efficiently.

No remodeling project is without a few hiccups, so prepare yourself to be flexible within the guidelines that you and your contractor set.

If you have other tips to share, we welcome your comments.
