Mitt Romney Delivers Keynote to Alumni of Sy Syms School of Business
Apr 30, 2007 -- The Sy Syms School of Business (SSSB), Yeshiva University’s undergraduate business school, celebrated its 20th anniversary on Thursday, April 26, at a gala dinner beginning at Gotham Hall in New York City. More than 570 people attended the event. Mitt Romney, former Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, was the guest speaker and shared his expertise as a business leader and former CEO of Bain & Company, a management consulting firm, with students, alumni and guests.

The celebration was initiated by Sy Syms School of Business students who raised more than $50,000 in sponsorship gifts for the dinner. Inspired by the students, alumni leaders joined forces with them and committed to raise additional unrestricted funds for the school as a means of demonstrating their appreciation to the school’s founding benefactors, leadership and faculty. The event was coined the “First Annual SSSB Student and Alumni Awards and Networking Dinner.”

“The Sy Syms School is on a new trajectory with stellar faculty and an energized alumni organization,” YU President Richard M. Joel said. “This anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the school’s impact on an entire generation of Jewish business leaders as well as to plan for the future, so that our students can continue to flourish in today’s global business environment and have a significant influence on society.”

The honorees were alumni from the first graduating class of 1988: RoAnna (Bienstock) Pascher, Partner, Grant Thornton, LLP, and Jonathan Nierenberg, Vice President, Global Services, IDT Corporation. The event was also a tribute to the founders of the school: Sy Syms, Marcy Syms, and the Syms family, founding benefactors; Hal H. Beretz, founding chairman of the Board; and eight founding faculty members.

The honorary co-chairs were Howard Jonas, founder and chairman of IDT Corporation; Jack Katz, managing partner of Grant Thornton; Daniel C. Kurtzer, former United States Ambassador to Israel and Egypt and a Yeshiva College alumnus; and Bernard L. Madoff, Madoff Investment Securities, LLC, who is chairman of the board of Sy Syms School of Business.
