White Flowering Annuals
Many of the plants we use in the United States as bedding plant annuals are actual tropical in origin. Some bedding plants with white flowers are native plants, which are more naturally insect resistant, salt tolerant and have natural disease resistance. Frequently, plants from the wild are then selected and hybridized for larger blooms, better bloom color, longer bloom time, improved disease resistance and even better foliage displays. Annuals, also commonly referred to as bedding plants, can be grown directly in the ground, in containers for patios and decks or in hanging baskets. Most of these annuals grow well with average soil moisture and partial or full sun, though some can take full shade giving the home gardener more options for use in the landscape. Annuals with white flowers add a brightness and softness to the landscape and works with cool colors of purple, blue and pink but also with warm colors of red, magenta, fuchsia and yellow. Bedding plants with white blooms look great with green and white leaves of variegated plants. The most well-known annuals with white blooms are: Candytuft, Cosmos, Egyptian Star Cluster, Flowering Tobacco, Moon Flower, Morning Glory, Stock and Verbena. Another white flowering annual is Horn of Plenty. These exotic flowers are one of the most spectacular plants for containers. Money Plant is usually grown for its translucent 'silver dollar' like seed pods and its fragrant flowers. To view learn more about white flowering annuals, please visit Virtual Plant Tags. |
