Vines That Can Grow in Dry Conditions
During the summer heat, some vines seem to thrive in the drought conditions while others suffer. While certain species of vines are more drought tolerant than others, or have the ability to tolerate periods of little water, all plants need water to survive. There is an increased need for efficient water use and water conservation practices in the home landscape, so in addition to selecting drought-tolerant vines, be sure to condition the soil with organic matter to help retain moisture. Some of the vines for dry conditions are native plants which frequently helps the plants be more insect resistant, disease resistant and salt tolerant. Many of these vines are successfully used in stressful urban settings. Certain varieties of drought tolerant vines can handle lower soil moisture levels for months on end and can flourish in areas where there is little or no precipitation for much of the year. For example, Trumpet Vine is native to United States, naturally occurring as far west as Texas. Since it is tolerant of hotter and drier climates, it also does well in Arizona, New Mexico and California. May of the drought tolerant vines such as Silvervein Creeper also have lovely fall or Autumn foliage colors, or beautiful fruits also. In addition, many of these vines attract birds and butterflies, particularly hummingbirds, to your home garden. You may also be surprised at the diversity in the list of these vines since some can also be used as groundcovers and shrubs.
