In the wintertime when few things are in flower, it is a pleasure to behold the welcome colors that winter blooming shrubs and trees can bring into your New Jersey garden.  There are many types to choose from.

Consider planting a Black Pussywillow (Salix melanostachys) with its deep purple-black flowers which flower in later winter.  The Black Pussywillow may be used as a grouping shrub, and it grows from about 6 to 10 feet.  Another good shrub choice for New Jersey is Common Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa).  It features white, pink, red or orange flowers and makes a nice grouping or hedge shrub.  February Daphne (Daphne mezereum) blooms in late winter as its common name implies.  It has purple flowers and grows to about 5 feet.  Spirea (Spiraea x arguta) is a beautiful grouping plant that will be covered in white flowers in late winter.  Sprirea also gives nice fall color to your New Jersey landscape. Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata) is a deciduous small tree or shrub that features white or pink flowers that bloom in late winter.  The blooms of the Star Magnolia are very showy and lightly fragrant.  Cornelian Cherry Dogwood (Cornus mas) is a small tree or large shrub that grows 15 to 30 feet.  In late winter, it has yellow blooms, and in summer, it bears red fruit.  Click here to find winter flowering trees at a New Jersey lawn and garden center near you.
