Purple Flowering Perennials

Some of the perennials with purple blooms are native plants, which are more naturally insect resistant, salt tolerant and have natural disease resistance. Particularly striking for flowers and foliage is American Trout Lily, Yellow Adder's Tongue, Purple Coneflowers are more than a garden staple since vast breeding work has resulted in a wide range of bloom colors that includes orange, yellow, white, pink and rosy red; Jack-In-The-Pulpit a dependable woodland plant and the sturdy New England Aster.

Perennials that flower purple add a special grace to a landscape. The strong, vibrant purple color can be enjoyed throughout the season and blends well with lavender, orchid, lilac, violet, white, blue, pink and looks particularly striking mixed with green and white variegated foliage on shrubs, groundcovers and evergreens. Purple perennials look striking with purple, white and pink Clematis vine, and purple flowering perennials are also great at attracting butterflies and birds, particularly hummingbirds.

Europe and Asia have given American gardeners wonderful exotic plants like Flax Wallflower, Asters, Autumn Crocus, Bellflowers, Canterbury Bells, Hosta, Ice Plants, Moss Verbenas, and Toad-lily.

Most of these perennials grow well with average soil moisture and partial or full sun, though some can take full shade, giving the home gardener more options for use in the landscape. Flowering perennials can be grown directly in the ground, in containers for patios and decks or even in hanging baskets.
