Title: Plant Forsythia Shrubs in Your South Carolina Garden and Enjoy Their Lovely Spring Blooms

Forsythia is a familiar shrub to most South Carolina gardeners.  This flowering shrub welcomes spring with its beautiful blossoms which are typically light to dark yellow, although there is one variety of Forsythia that features white blossoms.  Forsythia is a shrub that is well-suited to the climatic conditions of South Carolina.

At maturity, Forsythia will reach about 8 to 10 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide.  The form of the plant depends on the variety, and it may be either weeping or upright.  Forsythia is a fast growing shrub that blooms on old wood, so be sure to prune it in the springtime after its flowers have faded.  Never wait to prune after new buds have developed or you will be removing next year’s flowers.

Consider planting Forsythia in your South Carolina garden individually as a specimen plant or in groups as a shrub border.  For the best blooming potential, it is advisable to plant Forsythia in full sun.   Blossom-laden Forsythia branches may be used to make a bright, eye-catching interior display.  It is possible to force the blooms before they would naturally open to use for an interior arrangement by cutting a few branches then placing them in water indoors.  They should bloom within about 10 days.

There are many varieties of Forsythia to choose from. Please visit the Lawn & Garden Yellow Pages to locate a vendor of Forsythia that offers varieties that will grow best in your South Carolina garden.
