Pink Flowering Annuals

Annuals with pink flowers add a feeling of playfulness to the home garden. The romantic pink hues can be enjoyed throughout the season and blends well with cool colors of purple, blue and white but also with warm colors of red, magenta, fuchsia and yellow.

Most annuals grow well with average soil moisture and partial or full sun, though some can take full shade giving the home gardener more options for use in the landscape. Pink flowering annuals by their very nature are great at attracting butterflies and birds, particularly hummingbirds.

Many of the plants we use in the United States as bedding plant annuals are actual tropical in origin.  Some of these beautiful plants come to us from areas in Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, South America and the Mediterranean region. Some bedding plants with pink flowers are native plants, which are more naturally insect resistant, salt tolerant and have natural disease resistance.

While the less well-known plants can be fun to try and enjoy their differences, the most well-known annuals with pink blooms are: Asters, Begonias, Candytuft, Carnations, Spider Flower, Cosmos, Hollyhocks, Impatiens, Petunias, Phlox, Rose Mallows, and Zinnia.

Globe Amaranth is another popular pink flowering annual. The flowerheads produce an interesting texture and are often used in rock gardens, cutting gardens, annual beds and borders.

Another popular fragrant pink flowering annual is Catchfly, which gets its name from stems that emit a sticky sap that traps small insects.
