Hibiscus for Your Southern Florida Landscape

With so many varieties of hibiscus to choose from, Florida flower-loving gardeners may have a difficult time deciding which variety to select. Chinese Hibiscus, (rosa-sinensis) is a widely-popular tropical shrub that grows well in Southern Florida. This hibiscus requires full sun and grows from about 5 – 10 feet. Its flowers can be white, red, yellow or pink, and its leaves are evergreen. Shrub Althea Hibiscus (syriacus 'Minerva') has either red or purple flowers and can take a bit of shade. It also grows about 5 – 10 feet. These are just two examples of the many varieties of hibiscus that you might want to consider. Find Hibiscus in Florida.

After making certain the selection you are considering is hardy in your area, you might want to select your hibiscus based on its size, growth characteristics, and the color and size of its flowers. Hibiscus can be used as a hedge or screen, or as a focal point specimen in your garden. Hibiscus are also adaptable to container gardening. As with many flowering plants, hibiscus flowers can be cut and used to make beautiful floral arrangements that can be enjoyed inside your home.
