Flowering Annuals That Can Grow in Dry Conditions
During the summer heat, some annuals seem to thrive in the drought conditions while others suffer. While certain species of annuals are more drought tolerant than others, or have the ability to tolerate periods of little water, all plants need water to survive. There is an increased need for efficient water use and water conservation practices in the home landscape, so in addition to selecting drought-tolerant annuals, be sure to condition the soil with organic matter to help retain moisture. Many of the annuals with drought tolerance originated in hot, dry climates around the Mediterranean and Africa, primarily from Italy, Greece, Portugal, Canary Island and the large African Island of Madagascar. These annuals that flower can be grown around patios and decks, sidewalks and driveways and under or around trees, shrubs and evergreens. There are numerous species of drought tolerant annuals that will be an attractive addition to the garden, so consider these annuals if you wish to conserve water or have little time for watering; White Firewheel, Vinca and Wax Begonias. Wax Begonias have a rather firm, rigid leaf surface that conserves water, yet they look like they would be fragile. Flowering Vinca or Madagascar Periwinkle don't even get going in the greenhouse in the mid-late spring until it is quite warm. In pots or hanging baskets the Vinca look like they won't take much abuse. But with their built-in resilience, they will bounce back from a missed watering with surprising quickness and forgiveness. Annuals that withstand heat and dry conditions are perfect for raised or hanging containers of any sort since any plant that is not directly in the ground dries out faster.
