Bird watching is a hobby enjoyed by many people.  If you want to enjoy bird watching in your own Pennsylvania garden, consider planting Common Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) or one of many other berry-producing shrubs.  Common Winterberry, a plant native to the United States, is a berry-producing shrub that will attract birds to your Pennsylvania garden.

Also known as Black Alder, Coralberry or Michigan Holly, Common Winterberry is a deciduous holly that bears red fruit in the fall, providing a natural food source that will attract birds to your Pennsylvania garden.  Common Winterberry is a shrub well-suited to the climatic conditions in Pennsylvania.  It grows about 5 to 15 feet and is a good shrub to plant in groups.  Common Winterberry’s leaves are dark green in the summer then turn yellow and purple in the fall.  For best results, plant Common Winterberry in your Pennsylvania garden in a location where it will receive partial to full sun and adequate moisture.  Mulch your Common Winterberry shrubs for moisture retention and insulation.

Aside from attracting birds to your yard, the red berries on the Common Winterberry Holly will add color, texture and interest to your Pennsylvania garden in fall and winter.  Visit the Lawn & Garden Yellow Pages to locate a retailer of Common Winterberry Holly and other berry-producing shrubs.
