Bald Cypress – Pennsylvania
Known by the botanical name, taxodium distichum, Bald Cypress is a fast growing tree that can reach a height of 100 to 130 feet and a width of 20 to 30 feet. Bald cypress trees are deciduous and characterized by round, leathery cones, and short yellowish-green needles with either light gray or reddish-brown bark. The can live up to 600 years! The bald cypress tree provides seasonal interest as the leaves turn from green to orange and brown in the fall. The tree, best suited for use in large areas, may be planted in the landscape as a specimen in a park or on a large estate. Several may be planted as a grouping where space allows. Though it is good for wet or swampy areas, it is also drought-tolerant. When planted around a lake or swampy area, “knees” form on the side of the tree next to the water’s edge, resulting in a beautiful effect. Bald cypress trees are heat resistant and prefer full sun. If you are looking for a large, fast-growing tree to enhance the beauty of your Pennsylvania landscape, a bald cypress tree is good choice. Click here to find bald cypress trees in Pennsylvania. |
